The Wellness, Health and Youth Society (WHY) is a non-profit society offering programs and assistance throughout the Logan Lake Community.
Society
The Wellness, Health & Youth Society offers recreation and social service programs to the rural community of Logan Lake, population 2,165, creating a social hub and many volunteer opportunities. The town is nestled in the heart of B.C.’s Highland Valley, 320 kms. from Vancouver, 49 kms. from Merritt & 55 kms. from Kamloops. The Wellness, Health & Youth Society of Logan Lake, incorporated in July 2000, is a non-profit organization.
History
When the YM/YWCA made the decision to close its Logan Lake Branch, the Board of Directors and staff came up with the concept of the Wellness, Health & Youth Society.
The WHY has successfully entrenched itself in the community and plays a pivotal role in the town’s recreation and social programs. The heart of the community, the WHY boasts a membership that totaled 300+ at the end of December, 2010, a volunteer base of 150+, assets of $80K and no debts. In addition, a substantial number of nonmembers access the programs. The foregoing figures compare very favorably to the situation at time of start-up when the WHY inherited 50 YM/YWCA members and assets of $35K.
The Society has 12 volunteer directors and three paid staff positions (two full-time, one part-time). Since inception, three to four students have been employed during the summer months to run the “Summer Program”, an activity program for 6 -12 year old children. The students run the program under the direction of the Society. Consultants are hired to work on special projects. The Society draws on volunteers for regular & episodic assistance.
